Get to Know Me!

Hello friends, Happy Friday!

I thought we'll kick off my birthday month with something more personal. This is a very popular tag on YouTube and it looks really fun. The one I'm using has 30 questions, compared to the original one I believe has 25. I hope you'll find it interesting and learn something new about me!

1. What is your middle name?
I don't have one! When I (finally) get my citizenship one day, I will have my legal, Chinese first name be my middle name.

2. What is your favorite color?
Neon pink! Obviously...

3. Who was your first best friend?
My girl cousin that was 6 years older than me.

4. How tall are you?
Probably 5'5"? But I always say I'm 5'6".

5. Cats or Dogs?
Puppies! I love poodles.

6. Funniest moment throughout School?
I don't think there is...

7. How many countries have you visited?
Just China and US so far. But I really want to go to Cancun or Cabo, maybe later this year?

8. Are you in/gone to college?
Yes, I graduated from Harvey Mudd College and studied Engineering.
Two engineers having fun

9. What was your favorite/worst subject in High School?
I loved Math and Chemistry in high school.
I came to US in 10th grade, took ESL (English as a Second Language) for a year and moved up to regular English the year after (American literature was hard!). Math was much easier compared to what we took in China. I took AP statistics during my senior year and loved it. I only took one statistics course (graduation requirement) in college and honestly wished I had taken more. I still love and use statistics in my job and aspire to become a Six Sigma Black Belt!
AP Chemistry: Before contacts and that peace sign OMG!
Chemistry was hard for me in China, but I had an extremely helpful Chemistry teacher when I came to US. And she also speaks Manadarin! I continued to take AP Chemistry and more Chemistry courses in college. I seriously thought I was going to be a Chemistry major, until I came to realize that I hated spending long hours in the lab during my 2nd year of college. And Organic Chemistry was hard :(. Nonetheless, Chemistry still has a special place in my heart.

Worst subject has to be PE. I'm not a sporty or outdoorsy person. I took "Fit for Life" twice to fulfill my PE requirements and the teacher threatened to flunk me because I can't do push-ups! And I still can't!

10. What is your favorite drink?
  • Non-alcoholic: Infused-water, especially with lemon, strawberries and mint.
  • Alcoholic: I love making skinny margaritas at home (recipe coming soon).

11. What is your favorite animal?
Puppies, especially poodles!

12. What is your favorite perfume?
I can't pick just one, so I've narrowed it down to 3...
  • Current favorite and most-worn for the last two years: Jo Malone "English Pear & Freesia"
  • Most-worn and possibly my favorite ever: Victoria's Secret "Bombshell" -- I have worn this since college and repurchased at least 3 times. I still wear it to formal events/interviews when I want to smell clean and fresh, but not too overwhelming.
  • Favorite summer/beachy perfume: Bobbi Brown "Beach" -- smells like Coppertone sunscreen and I'm addicted!

13. Tea or Coffee?
Both!

14. What would you (or have you) name your children?
Hmm... never thought about that...

15. What sports do you play/have you played?
As I mentioned, not a sporty/outdoorsy person... However, I still believe shopping is a good exercise :P

16. What is your favorite book?
The White Girl Problems -- It's hilarious and I still need to read the 3rd one.

17. Who are some of your favorite YouTubers?
Chase AmieZoey ArielleSophie Shohet. I also loved Fabulous on a Budget/A Fab Life, but now they have separate channels -- Living with Leah and Mary Elizabeth.

18. What is your favorite movie?
Confessions of a Shopaholic (guilty pleasure!) and I consider myself a "Reformed Shopaholic" ;).

19. Are you single or taken?
Single

20. Whats your idea of an ideal first date?
Happy Hour! And the important part is, it's low-risk! First, you are in a public place. If the date is going well, you could continue to get dinner. If not, just say you have dinner plans and walk away ;).

21. How many girlfriends/boyfriends have you had?
4

22. Favorite memory from childhood?
Memories with my grandpa. He was in his late 60's when I was born and I was definitely his favorite grandchild. I always feel so warm thinking of him. The memories of us taking afternoon walks to the beach. The memories of him buying me whatever snacks my little heart desired. Especially in the summer, we got so much ice cream that would last the entire summer. He also let me watch all the TV I wanted even though my mom said not to. I was spoiled :).

Even when I got busier in middle school, I still tried to go to his place for lunch. He got me my favorites -- fried chicken and kebabs (how healthy for a kid...) as often as he could. He saved each day's newspaper for me to read after my homework and we chatted about the news. Whenever I called him after I came to US, he kept saying, "I miss you so much..." And I still remember the sincereness and a little sorrow in his voice. He only chatted for a little, then urged me back to studying, didn't want to take up too much of my time.
My cousin (left, mentioned in Question 3) and I at his Birthday Dinner
He passed away in June 2014 and the last time I saw him was in February that year. My parents attended his funeral, but I just started an internship and didn't go. I still remember when I read him Tang poetry (poems from Tang Dynasty) during my visit. I don't think he understood or even remembered what I read; he just kept looking at me and smiling...

I still miss him terribly to this day. But I've learned: Although it seems like we have all the time in the world with our grandparents (and even parents), time is so limited and precious. We tend to use "busy" as an excuse for not calling or visiting them, but they won't always be around. So be grateful and call or visit them today!

23. Do you speak any different languages and how well?
  • Mandarin Chinese: native speaker
  • Japanese: I took 2 years in high school and clearly forgot 90% of it. I can only have a conversation for 30 seconds: "Hi, my name is Julie. I'm Chinese. I studied Japanese for 2 years in high school (pretty sure I'm not saying that right). Nice to meet you!"
24. Do you have any siblings?
Nope, I'm the only child.

25. How would you describe your fashion sense?
Classic with some edge and a little boho (by which I meant anything from Anthropologie). My style icons are Lauren Conrad and Olivia Palermo.
Last year at Lauren Conrard's "Celebrate" book signing
wearing her Runway collection for Kohl's
26. What is your favorite restaurant?
This is so hard to choose, but I love PF Chang's! Especially their Happy Hour!

27. What are some of your favorite TV shows?
Gossip Girl, How I Met Your Mother, the Big Bang Theory, and Two Broke Girls.
My current favorite is Fresh Off the Boat and I'm still on Season 3.

28. PC or mac?
PC

29. What phone do you have? (iOS v Android?)
I still have an IPhone 5S...

30. Tell us one of your bad habits!
I don't floss every day :O and I really should...

These're all the deets I'll spill today. I had so much fun writing this and am definitely considering doing another one in the future.

Come back next week to see what I got from Memorial Day weekend!

Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend! :)
